China Wins 1st Place, USA Takes 2nd at the 2023 International Mathematical Olympiad

The 64th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) took place in Chiba, Japan, from July 2-13, 2023, with over 600 students from 112 countries competing.

🔹 China secured 1st place with a total score of 240 points. All six Chinese team members won gold medals, with Wang Chunji and Shi Haojia achieving perfect scores (42/42 points). This marks China’s fifth consecutive team gold victory.

🔹 USA finished in 2nd place with 222 points. The USA team members won five gold medals and one silver, with Derek Liu achieving a perfect score and tying for 1st place individually.

Both teams showcased outstanding mathematical talent, competing in a two-day event where students solved six complex math problems. The USA team was coached by Po-Shen Loh (Carnegie Mellon University) and Carl Schildkraut (MIT).

The IMO is the world’s most prestigious high school math competition, bringing together top students from around the globe to test their problem-solving skills.
